The arts have been linked with numerous academic benefits that help to rectify the disparity of achievement that traditionally exists between students in high poverty areas and their more financially able peers. In a 2012 study, The Arts and Achievement in At-Risk Youth, by Catterall, J.S., Dumais, S.A. & Hampden-Thompson, it was found that students with low socioeconomic status but high arts participation had an average school dropout rate five times less than students with low amounts of access to the arts.

By Jay Cady, Teaching Artist at Kansas City Young Audiences STEM (Science Technology Engineering and Science) was a hot topic at the 2015 Young Audiences National Conference in Kansas City. It was mentioned at nearly every event I attended, including the keynote address from Jane Chu, Chair of the National Endowment for the Arts. (My favorite statistic she cited was that Nobel Laureates are 17 times more likely to be involved in the arts than other scientists.) The popular idea is to expand STEM to STEAM with the “A” standing for Arts. There is some pushback from both sides.
